This evening a San Francisco Institution closes its doors permanently. If you are Italian and have ties to San Francisco chances are you've had a grandparent's birthday party, baptism, or some sort of family gathering at Caesar's. For economic reasons we probably won't see another restaurant like Caesar's; it's simply too large to keep it busy enough, plus not too many kids from Twitter, Square and Salesforce.com want to sit through a seven course meal served by guy in a tux.
Starting tomorrow, the mythology of Caesar's begins. Last night I joined my dad and some of my "paisanos": the Giachetti brothers, Tony "Rags" Raghetti, Vaccaro, Machado, Nick and Dr. String to pay homage to this institution. Here are some photos of the evening.
The food a Caeser's is a lot like these guys, never changes.
Tony Bennet was joined by the slightly less famous Tony Bennetti (with the author), pictured below...
"If you're going to have a last dance, this veal is a hell of a last dance" - Overheard at dinner, I have no idea what it means.
Another piece of the past closes its door. Thanks for the memories...
