Road Trip!

Kids are funny.  One minute they reconfirm your faith in being open to the endless possibilities of life.  The next you are considering putting them up for adoption.

Camping is funny too.  It can inspire you in ways that bring you to tears, but also have you crying for your mommy on a cold wet night of total hell.

So what did we decide to do for our spring break this year?  Take our kids camping! ...in an RV!

El Capitan

Great state park close to the beach and 20 miles north of Santa Barbara.  Interesting little right break off a cobblestone point.

Lucas and Nico played in the rivermouth that emptied onto the beach while I surfed.  The RV was critical because it poured rain all night.  Without it, the camping trip would have ended on day two.

Malibu Creek State Park

Best camping site we stayed at.  This is where rock climbing had it's first beginnings with Royal Robbins.  It's also where M*A*S*H was filmed.  Low calorie access with stunning natural rock formations and interesting wild life.  Hikes were easy enough for the kids (with a couple of shoulder rides)

Disneyland

We parked the RV at Maria's sister's house and spent some time with our cousins.  The day looked more like Oregon than Orange County, but we pressed on.  This was my favorite day of the trip - not one complaint, just pure fun in the rain at the happiest place on earth.

We had so much fun, that we went back the next day when the weather was perfect.

San Onofre

We were pretty tired the last night in San Onofre.  This campground was more like a tailgate than the back country, which suited us fine.  Our neighbors had some great kids and Lucas and Nico had fun playing with them.  Lucas's nerd-covered smores were a huge hit.

Met some friends in the morning and hung our around the campsite.  Missed surfing Old Mans, but I'll catch it next time.

I don't know how we pulled it off, but we managed to blend kids and camping into a really fun trip down the coast..in the rain...in an RV.  It's better to be lucky than good.
